Program Highlights

Title I Part A

Learning Assistance Program

Title I Part A provides federal dollars for supplemental educational opportunities for disadvantaged children who are most at risk of failing to meet the State's challenging content and performance standards.

A Schoolwide program permits an eligible school to use Title I Part A funds in combination with State and local resources and most other federal education program funds to upgrade the entire educational program of the school to raise the academic achievement of all students.

Davis Elementary and Meadow Brook Intermediate are implementing School Wide Title I Programs.

Parents as partners in education are an extremely important part of the Title I program. Through parental involvement activities, parents are provided opportunities to actively participate in their child's education. Parents may work with their children using the One-Minute Reader from the Title I resource room, participate in school based activities, visit their child's classroom and teacher, and attend conferences. The Title I School Wide Compact outlines how parents, students and schools will share the responsibility for improved student learning. Every parent should receive a copy of the school's Home/School Compact to review. Compacts may be revised as needed. Parents are encouraged to volunteer on school improvement teams, assist in extended day activities, and partner with other parents, teachers, and the school administrator(s) through PTA.

The following may be supported by the Title I School Wide Program:

Provide additional instruction to children who are experiencing difficulty in reading and/or math

Provide extended learning opportunities before or after the regular school day.

Title I Part A seeks achievement of high academic standards by all children and provides for additional educational assistance in general education classroom by Title I personnel

Focus on success by using measurement of student academic progress and needs through assessment

Providing accountability for results in schools

Maintaining high quality standards for instructional personnel

Providing parental knowledge, involvement, and choices

LAP is a state-funded program designed to serve students with the greatest deficits in academic basic skills as identified by statewide assessments.

The Learning Assistance Program addresses basic skills including reading, writing, mathematics and readiness associated with those skills. Students scoring in levels 1 and 2 on state and district assessments are the focus of this support to increase student performance.

Meadow Brook Intermediate and John Sager Middle School implement a Learning Assistance Program.

Students in LAP have an Accelerated Learning Plan with the following components:

  • Achievement goals for students
  • Roles of students, teachers, and parents or guardians in the plan
  • Communication regarding student achievement
  • Plan reviews and an adjustment process

Parents are encouraged to partner with teachers and students in reviewing the individualized plan at conference times, providing support at home, and communicating regularly with the LAP teacher to improve student success.

The following are services and activities that may be supported by the Learning Assistance Program:

  1. Extended learning time opportunities occurring:
    1. Before or after the regular school day;
    2. On Saturday; and
    3. Beyond the regular school year;
  2. Professional development for certificated and classified staff that focuses on:
    1. The needs of a diverse student population;
    2. Specific literacy and mathematics content and instructional strategies; and
    3. The use of student work to guide effective instruction;
  3. Consultant teachers to assist in implementing effective instructional practices by teachers serving participating students;
  4. Tutoring support for participating students; and
  5. Outreach activities and support for parents of participating students.
